What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind that everyone has already experienced many times, whether by accident or by design. The accepted medical definition of hypnosis is: An altered state of consciousness in which the conscious mind is temporarily bypassed, so that the subconscious mind becomes highly receptive to selective, positive suggestions. It is the state of mind which you slip into as you fall asleep at night. The state when if somebody calls your name and you can't be sure if you heard them or just dreamed they were calling your name. The same thing happens as you awaken each morning. 
What is the “subconscious mind”?

The term “subconscious mind” is used to refer to everything the mind does that is not in general conscious awareness or general thinking. The subconscious mind represents what some call the “Inner Child”. It is the part of us that can pick up the pieces after a tragedy strikes, the part that can hope, and believe there is something worth going on for. The subconscious mind manages certain aspects of our psychological and emotional experience: emotional expression,   memories, fantasies, dreams, daydreams, intuition and inspiration.

The subconscious mind also manages certain elements of physical functioning such as the management and awareness of physical sensations including pain, awareness of body position also known as proprioception, regulating the functions of autonomic nervous system including blood pressure, heart rate, hormone secretion, body temperature, and respiration etc.
 The current understanding of the subconscious mind is that it is intelligent, creative and focused on survival, well being and individual self expression. We now understand that the trance-like state experienced during hypnosis provides access to internal, intelligent, creative forces that can be directed toward specific therapeutic outcomes.

We often enter this natural state of subconsciousness unknowingly. When you have  become so absorbed in a TV program, movie or video game that you didn’t hear someone speaking to you, then you were probably in a trance or hypnotic state. Often, people experience a state known as “road trance” or “highway hypnosis” when driving. Perhaps you’ve arrived at your destination with no clear memory of just how you got there, or maybe you’ve suddenly become aware that you just missed your exit because you were thinking of something else, or daydreaming. The term “subconscious mind” is used to refer to everything the mind does that is not in general conscious awareness or general thinking.

Is there a difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a state of mind that a person experiences. Hypnotherapy is using that state for beneficial purposes

Can a hypnotist make me do things against my will, cluck like a chicken perhaps?  
NO! The hypnotist has no power over you at all and cannot make you do anything against your will.  All hypnosis is really self hypnosis. What the hypnotist does is guide you into a hypnotic state. This is something you can easily learn to do for yourself, if you wish. Since the hypnotist is not a master, but a guide, the hypnotist does not have any special powers over you. You are always in control, can ask questions and can end the session at any time if you choose. It is important to remember that you are forming a partnership with your therapist. The object of this partnership is to help you attain as deep a trance as you need to achieve your goals.
What issues can hypnosis help with?

Hypnosis can be used for any area of self improvement, including; stress management, phobia elimination, weight loss and healthy lifestyle choices, smoking cessation, pain management, substance abuse, emotional trauma, natural childbirth, and even hypnotic anesthesia for medical and dental procedures! The use of hypnosis for anesthesia has been accepted by the American Medical Association since 1958.

Can I get stuck in a trance and never come out?

No! If you were hypnotized and the hypnotist left the room and never returned, your own mind would pull you safely out of the hypnosis in one of two ways. You would either realize the hypnotist was no longer talking to you, and you would open your eyes and be wide awake and feeling fine; or you would drift into a normal sleep for a few minutes and then wake up normally, feeling fine.

 How much does hypnosis cost?

Hypnosis can be integrated as a part of your ongoing treatment. It can be provided withing the context of therapy tools to be used and is paid for by your Health Insurance. It can also be requested separately from  your therapy sessions and will cost around half as much than one self-pay session.
